WARDOGS Pre-Release Review: Early Impressions & Risks

WARDOGS has 0 steam user reviews, so there is no final score yet. Dated media and creator reports show promising objective play, meaningful support roles and real Early Access risks. They can help you decide whether to pre-order or wait, but they cannot prove launch performance or player consensus.

The August Closed Beta is over and its public-test NDA was lifted. The official recap now directs prospective buyers toward player first-impression videos and BULKHEAD's own “10 Reasons NOT to Buy” video before pre-ordering.

BULKHEAD announced that WARDOGS passed one million Steam wishlists on August 14, 2026. That is a dated measure of interest, not evidence that the game is good, balanced or ready.

What looks promising?

A PC Gamer closed-playtest report, based on roughly five hours, highlighted several concrete signals:

  • The three-team fight is organized around a clear objective rather than kills alone.
  • Cash makes loadout, survival, rescue and transport decisions consequential.
  • Objective presence, healing and transport can reward players who do not have the most kills.
  • The gunplay felt more approachable to that writer than a conventional military-simulation shooter.
  • Free-form equipment roles let players adapt without waiting for a locked class slot.

The strongest example is a helicopter pilot who repeatedly transported players, accumulated cash and reached a high scoreboard position with very few kills. It shows that non-kill play mattered in that test, not that the payout balance is final.

What could still go wrong?

  • The cash economy could reward safe personal profit over the current team objective.
  • Teams without locked classes may notice too late that nobody brought a needed medical, breaching or anti-vehicle tool.
  • Persistent progression and equipment costs may widen the gap between established and new players.
  • Large battles, destruction and vehicles still need launch-build performance evidence across different PCs.
  • Controller coverage is limited, while crossplay, cross-progression and console dates remain unconfirmed.
  • Pre-release footage cannot establish launch-day server stability, final content or long-term retention.

Who should pre-order, and who should wait?

Consider pre-ordering if…

  • You value objective-driven combined arms and self-chosen support jobs.
  • You understand that Early Access balance, performance and progression can change.
  • The current pre-release price matters more than launch reviews.

Wait if…

  • You need a stable review consensus or a score based on the release build.
  • You need verified performance on your exact hardware or complete controller support.
  • You want a finished economy, fixed content list or confirmed console/crossplay path.

Pre-ordering now does not provide access to the concluded August Closed Beta.

When will there be enough information for a firmer verdict?

A firmer verdict becomes possible after September 10, when the main app is playable, real Steam user reviews exist, and current-version performance, content and economy can be separated from older Alpha and Beta footage.

A scored first-hand review would also need to disclose the tested game version, hardware, server region, playtime, roles attempted and any creator access. Until then, this is a cautious judgment about who the game may suit, not a number.
